Low temperature refrigeration and liquefaction (229 min): This module reviews the various processes and approaches to cryogenic refrigeration. After an introduction to the thermodynamics of gas refrigeration, application of these processes to practical refrigeration and liquefaction cycles is presented. First, recuperative cycles such as Linde-Hampson, Cascade, Claude are evaluated both as refrigerators and liquefiers. Working examples of various designs and characteristics of components are included. Second, regenerative cycles are reviewed starting with the Stirling cycle, then Gifford McMahon cycle and pulse tubes. Several applications are discussed.
